VisualAge for Java Among Five New IBM
Development Tools for Enterprises With the beta release of
VisualAge for Java*, IBM begins integrating the JavaBeans** component model into
the entire VisualAge Family. BeanMachine* (formerly called AppletAuthor*), a
visual authoring tool for creating Java-enhanced Web sites, will come with
VisualAge for Java. VisualAge WebRunner* toolkit supports building and testing
JavaBeans. JavaBeans Migration Assistant for ActiveX* enables developers to
convert ActiveX** components to JavaBeans components.

Platform for the Enterprise IBM, Oracle, Sun, and Netscape are
jointly supporting the Java Platform for the Enterprise** and the new Enterprise
JavaBeans**, introduced by Sun. As the new platform's centerpiece, Enterprise
JavaBeans is a key element for ensuring interoperability between software
products and promoting open standards. It provides the foundation for delivering
the equivalent of a dial tone to the Web.
IBM, Oracle, Tandem Converge on JSQL for
Database-Driven Java Apps IBM, Oracle, and Tandem are specifying
JSQL, a Java language extension that simplifies the ability to build
business-critical Java database applications. The companies will jointly support
development of the JSQL standard, and create products compatible with it. JSQL
will be submitted to the ISO/IEC standards body once Java is standardized.

Bandwidth Breakthroughs: Why the Web Won't Collapse
Despite doom-and-gloom predictions, the sky hasn't fallen in
cyberspace. There is no imminent Internet collapse looming, no matter how
crowded the online population gets. Although the Internet has had growing pains,
improvements in infrastructure and data network resources will continue to make
the Internet viable for conducting business and widespread consumer use. Several

Information Week: IBM DB2 Tries for Universal Appeal
In its 21 April issue, Information Week says "Raps against
DB2 have been that it lacked a graphical interface for administration, that its
SQL was not as full-featured as competitors', and that it didn't fully integrate
into TCP/IP networks. With version 5, IBM silences those complaints." Read
their review of this
cross-platform release of DB2.
MQSeries and Component Broker: Object Framework for
Business Processes MQSeries integrates business processes over a
range of application environments. CBToolkit and CBConnector add an object
framework based on the CORBA standard. Customers who use MQSeries together with
Component Broker software can gain the advantages of MQSeries and the benefits
of component application development and deployment. Using CBToolkit and
MQSeries, developers can implement CORBA component-based applications and
integrate them effectively with non-CORBA applications.
